Our Certified Professional Dog Trainer uses reward-based behavior modification and training methods. We emphasize positive reinforcement as recommended by leading veterinarians and humane associations. We also educate owners on effective techniques to establish a leadership relationship with their pet. Our private dog obedience training services are available at our convenient Northern Virginia location in the Town of Vienna and we also offer sessions at your home in the Washington DC metro area (see service area below for details). We can often provide opportunities for practice around our own dogs who have been trained specific behaviors to assist in the training sessions.

Methods

We emphasize positive reinforcement by using treats, toys and other things your dog enjoys to teach new behaviors. You will learn various ways to reward desired behavior so you will not be reliant on treats to have a well-mannered dog. We also educate owners on non-confrontational ways to establish a healthy, leadership relationship with their pet.

Reward-based methods work, they are easy to use, effective, efficient and humane. These are the same techniques recommended by the American Veterinary Society for Animal Behavior.

Golden Retriever puppy

With positive methods, training can start as soon as you get your puppy. Gibbs, a 10 week old Golden Retriever and a Cooperative Paws student starts to learn basic commands. Of course, it is never too late to learn! We have worked with many canine "senior citizens" (including several dogs older than 10).

Advantages of Our Private Training Sessions

  • Customized services focus on what you and your dog really need

  • Individualized attention and coaching often enables fewer sessions to reach training goals

  • Lesson times that work with your busy schedule

  • Practice at your pace. Increasing distractions slowly sets your dog up to succeed.

  • Written summary of recommendations provided after each session facilitates learning

  • Phone and email support available between sessions

Siberian Husky being trained

It is a myth that independent breeds can only be trained to perform reliably using physically punitive methods. Nacho, our trainer's siberian husky was trained to earn an AKC Canine Good Citizen certificate and work as a therapy dog using reward-based training.
